Somethings to know when traveling to Morocco

As in all places, in Morocco there are a series of customs that the traveler should know. Some of them related to respect and others to take into account when traveling and moving around the country.

Tea is a very important drink for Moroccans. In each house there is at least one teapot, it is a symbol of welcome. Normally, whenever you go to a private house they will offer you a cup of tea.

When entering a private house it is customary to take off your shoes. Houses are normally provided with carpets.

In Morocco there is a holy month, the month of Ramadan. Even if it is not followed, the traveler must know the customs and rituals that are carried out, especially if traveling to Morocco during the holy month. This month varies every year, it is not fixed and depends on the moon. It must be taken into account that during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the hours of sun. You can find stores closed or open later.

The greeting in Morocco is by giving the right hand and bringing it closer to the chest, a symbol that the person greeted takes to the heart. It is also good to know that the word “salam” means “peace” and “salam Alaikum” means “peace be with you”. Between men who know each other it is normal to greet each other with kisses. The greeting to an older person is usually with a kiss on the right hand or on the forehead.

Haggling is normal in Morocco. There is no need to be afraid of haggling, as long as it is done with respect.

You can find alcohol in Morocco, but you have to know that a good Muslim does not drink alcohol, therefore it can be unpleasant for a Muslim person to accompany others to buy alcoholic beverages.

Henna is a symbol of beauty and fertility as well as it is used to prevent evil eyes. It is the women who tattoo their hands and feet with henna.
